Frequently asked questions.
Q How does removing your name and address from online directories help reduce the risk of identity theft?
A Someone wanting to assume your identity will need to know your name and address. Online directories not only provide this, but also your previous addresses, and the names of those who share those addresses (which often includes names of parents, children, siblings, roommates, or other family members) This is ideal for the identity theif building a profile of your identity. Removing your personal information from as many of these sources as possible makes you a more difficult target. It is like having a home security system - the theif simply moves on to the next potential victim that is an easier target.
Q I have always had an unlisted number, but I see my name in people search engines like Virtual Earth and PeopleFinders, how did my name get out there in the first place?
A Phone companies are allowed to publish unlisted numbers in sources other than the phone book. In other words, even if you ae unlisted the phone company can publish your number online. We can help you correct this.
Q Do I need your service or could I do all this myself?
A It is possible to research all of these sources and prepare the opt-out requests on your own. However, we believe our service is worth the cost because of the time you save. Not to mention the amount we spend on printing and postage. We have kept the cost of our service as low as possible considering all the mailing we do on your behalf and stand behind the value 100%. We find new sources just about every week, and all our customers benefit because we go back and resubmit their information to any of these new sources on their behalf... and we know most people won't take the time to be this complete.... therefore, we know our service is a good value.
Q Do I have to do anything after I order your service?
A Yes, we prepare 5 letters that require your signature and/or some form of proof of your identity before being sent to the corresponding company. We send these to you already prepared so it is as easy as possible, but it will require you to complete this step. In addition, we send you a number of recommended steps for maximum privacy that you are encouraged to consider (such as the use of a private mailbox, requesting your phone company make your information "unpublished", and specific instructions for some automated phone-based opt outs. The bottom-line is, we do a bunch of leg work on your behalf, but there are some steps only you can complete because we refuse to ask for your social security number online (we think only you should know that number anyway)
Q How does this reduce the amount of mail I get?
A When you aren't on the marketing lists, you are not going to get as much junk mail, it really is that simple. We opt you out of all the standard places like Dunn & Bradstreet and Direct Marketing Association as well as thinks like major sweepstakes databases, ete. To be honest, as of November 2007 we have automated over 100 different sources like these, and the number grows every month... so your personal information simply isn't in these agressive marketing databases.
Q Does this help me get less spam in my email?
A Nope (at least not yet). BUT WE DO CUT DOWN THE JUNK MAIL AT HOME! We think reducing unwanted mail is pretty cool because we don't know too many people who like junk mail.
Q Do you protect my credit cards?
A We do not get directly involved with your financial records or accounts in any way. We recommend you take the simple (and free) precautions available by placing alerts and/or a freeze on your credit records with the major credit bureaus. We offer the most complete opt-out solution available and believe it is an important part of a solid identiy protection solution. In other words, we do one thing, and we do it really well... we get you off as many lists as possible as quickly as we know how and are always looking for new ways to help you stay off the lists.)
